The holidays provide opportunities for many local efforts to help the needy. Annually, we provide Christmas gifts and caroling at a senior citizen Alzheimer's facility, with the help of the Girl Scouts and Casa Roble Interact members. With the help of the Boy Scouts, we provide baskets for the needy in Orangevale at Thanksgiving and Christmas. This year we also provided the staff for the collection and distribution of over 80 baskets at Christmas through Divine Savior Church. Recipients did not have to be church members. We also work with the Folsom Zoo, providing wrapped Christmas gift boxes for the animals to open and enjoy the treat (food) inside.

We are also dedicated to the safety of our senior citizens year round. We do an annual check of smoke detectors at local senior citizen mobile home parks. This fall (2000) we had over 20 volunteers, including Rotary members and their families, the Boy Scouts, and even a foreign exchange student going door to door to check the functioning of each smoke detector in the mobile homes.
Youth in the greater Sacramento area also benefit from our community service. This year we collected and distributed school supplies, clothing and bedding to the WIND Project, which benefits homeless teens. We also participated in People Reaching Out's Halloween Carnival serving food, the profits from which go to substance abuse counseling. We cooked and served lunch to Ride To Walk volunteers, a program which provides therapeutic horseback riding for physically-challenged children.
Finally, we work with other Rotary clubs on projects of local interest, such as Mather Lake Rotary Park, a park adjacent to the former Mather Air Force Base which now houses picnic grounds, a lake for fishing, barbecue pits, and a large covered eating area. We have contributed many pints of blood to the Sacramento Blood Bank through our donor program.
Orangevale Rotary is always open to suggestions for appropriate community projects to sponsor.
