Awards.
One of the first district awards received by our club at the annual District Club Assembly was an award for perfect attendance. In the early 70's, our attendance had been very poor (we were in competition with Ely, Nevada for the poorest attendance each month (about 60%). The 24 club members made a commitment in 1974 to have excellent attendance. With considerable coaxing (chicken in a cage), the club had six months in a row of 100% attendance by the total membership. In 1975-76, with Bill Sweeney as president, we established a record in Rotary that has not been broken: 12 months of 100% attendance by all members of the club.
In the early 80's our club's membership dropped to about
14 members, and there was some discussion about merging the club with
Citrus Heights. After considerable soul searching, several members began
working hard to strengthen the club by increasing the membership, improving
programs, changing to a breakfast club, and upgrading activities in
each of the avenues of service. With strong leadership by several presidents
and Boards of Directors, working with committed members, the Orangevale
Rotary Club has become the "Most Outstanding" club in District 5180
for four out of the last 6 years running, 1996-97, under the leadership
of Pat Surra, 1997-98, under the leadership of Dave Harris, and 1998-99,
under the leadership of Betty Olson. The club also earned the designation
of Medium Size Club of Excellence for 1999-2000, under the leadership
of Terry Ryan. The Orangevale Club regained the title of Outstanding
Club of the Year during the 2000-2001 year under the leadership of Jane
Wise. The club earned the designation of Medium Size Club of Excellence
for 2003-2004, under the leadership of Lorie Rheams. The Orangevale
Club regained the title of Outstanding Club of the Year during the 2005-2006
year under the leadership of Russ Rheams
